UNESCO Treasures of Transylvania

Transylvania holds a remarkable share of Romania's UNESCO World Heritage. The Villages with Fortified Churches were inscribed in 1993 and extended in 1999 — seven Saxon and Székely villages whose churches were ringed with defensive walls against Ottoman raids. We visit Prejmer, the mightiest of them all, begun by the Teutonic Knights, with over 270 shelter rooms built into its circular wall; Viscri, the storybook village where King Charles III bought a house; and Saschiz, with its striking 15th-century church tower. We end in Sighișoara, inscribed in 1999 — Europe's best-preserved inhabited medieval citadel and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. History, verified: every stop on this route is on the official UNESCO World Heritage List.
